Huelva has a large number of villages in the province that captivate visitors with their combination of history and charm: the White Villages Route. There are numerous villages in Huelva that combine narrow streets, whitewashed walls and quiet squares, combining the charm of the landscape with traditional architecture.

This route, which you can start from our AMA Residences facilities, offers you a tour that will take you to the most traditional area of Huelva where you will be able to get to know first-hand the friendliness of its people. If we have already offered you the charms of other white villages such as Ayamonte or El Rocío, today we offer you a list of 6 places in the mountains of Huelva included in the Route of the White Villages to enjoy in a weekend. Let’s get started!

Minas de Río Tinto

The route can start in the town of Minas de Río Tinto. In this small village you will find the largest open-cast mine in Europe: the Corta Atalaya. This is why the river Tinto, which bathes this small white village, has a reddish color, hence its name. This is caused by the oxidation of the minerals that make up the deposits through which the river flows, which gives its water a color from another planet. You can visit the whole area on a train that takes you on a journey through the history of the region.

Almonaster la Real

Continuing northwards along the route you will come to Almonaster la Real. High in the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, this village of just 600 inhabitants has the only castle in Spain with a mosque in its grounds, which dates back to the Moorish period in the 10th century. The views from the top of the castle are worth admiring.

Cortegana

Following the road through Almonaster la Real you will come to Cortegana. The hermitage of La Piedad, immersed in a castle whose enclosure measures more than 300 square metres, watches over the town from the top, from where you can enjoy the views of the sierra before descending to visit its whitewashed houses or the public washing place. The second half of August sees the famous Cortegana Medieval Fair.

Fuenteheridos

Heading east, 20 minutes from Cortegana, you will reach Fuenteheridos. Considered an Asset of Cultural Interest, this small village surrounded by holm oaks, chestnut and cork oaks stands out for its cobbled streets and white walls, as well as for its gastronomy, which is highly valued in the area. Life in this village revolves around the Plaza del Coso, where you will find the famous Fuente de los Doce Caños (Fountain of the Twelve Spouts). This town was very important in the 20th century thanks to its marble and lime quarries.

Alájar

The penultimate place on this Route of the White Villages is Alájar. At the top of this small Moorish-era village is the Peña de Arias Montano, where you will find the complex of La Reina de los Ángeles, from where you can see the immensity of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. In the village you can enjoy the church of San Marcos, with the highest tower in the province of Huelva.

Aracena

To finish this route of 6 white villages, there is no better place to do it than Aracena, considered the capital of this area. This white village is immersed in a hill that offers masterful views, especially from the Castle of Aracena. Right in the center of the town is the jewel in the crown: the Gruta de las Maravillas, a set of underground galleries of stalactites, stalagmites and freshwater lakes stretching for more than 2 kilometers.
