Cycling routes in the Algarve: Discover the Portuguese Coast by bike

Would you like to discover the Algarve in a different way? We propose an active and fun plan: cycling along the Portuguese coast. From AMA Residences Andalucía, you can easily reach the neighboring Algarve region and enjoy its trails, beaches and charming villages, all at the stroke of a pedal.

Below, we share some of the most outstanding routes, along with tips to make the most of this experience.

1. Ecovia do Litoral: From Vila Real de Santo António to Sagres

  • Distance: Approximately 214 km.
  • Difficulty: Medium (although it can be divided into short sections).
  • Points of interest: The departure from Vila Real de Santo António, opposite Ayamonte, is ideal for observing the mouth of the Guadiana River. Along the way, you will find picturesque towns such as Tavira, Olhão or Albufeira, until you reach the imposing cape of Sagres.

Why you will like it

The Ecovia do Litoral runs along the Algarve coastline and is well signposted. Along the way, you will discover beautiful coastal panoramas, stop at quiet beaches and taste typical dishes, such as seafood cataplana. A perfect way to combine exercise and tourism.

2. Tavira – Cacela Velha: A walk between history and nature.

  1. Distance: Between 15 and 20 km (round trip).
  2. Difficulty: Low, suitable even for those who are not used to cycling.
  3. Points of interest: The historic center of Tavira, with its traditional houses and bridges over the Gilão River; the fortress of Cacela Velha, which offers spectacular views of the Ria Formosa.

Why you will like it

It is a simple and pleasant route that combines cultural heritage and wetland landscapes. It will allow you to experience the beauty of the eastern Algarve, stop at its family restaurants and, of course, enjoy the breathtaking coastal views at Cacela Velha.

3. Olhão – Faro: An itinerary next to the Ria Formosa

  • Distance: 15 km approximately.
  • Difficulty: Low, with a practically non-existent slope.
  • Points of interest: The salt pans and marshes of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the Olhão fish market and the walled city of Faro (Vila Adentro).

Why you will like it

If you enjoy bird watching, here you will be able to see flamingos, herons and other species that inhabit these lagoons and wetlands. When you arrive in Faro, in addition to its charming old town, you will find numerous bars and restaurants where you can recover your strength with a good meal typical of the area.

4. Sierra de Monchique: mountain adventure.

  • Distance and difficulty: Varies according to the route; you can find routes of medium-high difficulty.
  • Points of interest: Mountain scenery, traditional villages, eucalyptus and cork oak forests, and the famous Monchique hot springs.

Why you will like it

If you are looking for a greater challenge, Monchique offers a different environment from the coast, with ascents and descents that reward the effort with spectacular views of the mountains and the coast. In addition, in the area you can relax in spas or enjoy the local gastronomy, which differs from the typical beach dishes.

Tips for organizing your route

  1. Plan the route: Check the distance, difficulty and places of interest. You can divide long routes into several stages or choose only one section for a day trip.
  2. Proper equipment: Bring a helmet, comfortable clothing, water and sunscreen. A small backpack or saddlebag will be useful for storing the essentials.
  3. Bike rental: In most urban centers in the Algarve you will find options for renting bicycles, including electric bikes, perfect for those who want extra help on the slopes.
  4. When to go: Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures ideal for cycling. In summer, we recommend leaving early to avoid the central hours of heat.
